If you want to work in a career which clearly requires a university degree such as being a biologist or engineer, then university’s worth it. Otherwise, it’s not. You do not need to get a university degree if you want to be a hair stylist, cosmetologist, or multimedia artist, but vocational experiences and associate diplomas are needed. In fact, attitude is more important than knowledge in these careers, where people need to be hard-working, patient, and experienced.

Going to university is not just about the piece of paper you get at the end. You should not underestimate the whole experience of becoming self-reliant, meeting people from other parts of the world, and making friends from different walks of life. It is a life-changing experience and is undoubtedly worth it.

Professionals like doctors, lawyers, and accountants need specialised knowledge, and they have to pass certain admission exams to obtain a license. For these jobs, you definitely need to apply for university.

But there are many good careers that don’t require a university degree. For example, to be a real estate broker good judgement, honesty, and enthusiasm are very important. For jobs that do not need certain skills, a good attitude and work performance are more important than academic performance.

University days could be the best days of your life. Whether it’s worth it for getting a job and all that malarkey is pretty irrelevant, compared to the experience of learning – and not to mention the fun you can have.

If you are going to study something which is geared towards a particular profession then it is worth it. If I study something for the sake of studying it and have no idea what career path I will take, then no it isn’t worth it. Get a job and train through that employer. Otherwise, if you get a masters degree in English you might end up working as a fitness instructor, as not all degrees will guarantee you a great job. Actually, pretty much all jobs are rubbish and miserable, so I’ll stay out of the workplace for as long as I can.

Many jobs require university certifications, such as doctors, teachers and lawyers. For other careers, university helps broaden our social circle. Particularly if you’re going into business, it is easier to start out by cooperating with your university schoolmates.

But there are some fabulous jobs that don’t require a certification sheet. For example, some famous YouTubers earn a lot by posting hit videos. They usually record their daily lives to entertain their fans. But for this a creative mind is more important than a university degree.

Lots of good jobs don’t need a university degree if you’re willing to work hard. Marketing and sales managers can earn up to HK$100,000 per year, if you’re the kind of person that could sell sand in the desert. Salaries vary, starting at about $18,000 and reaching up to$70,000 and beyond, but you will often earn commission (extra payment depending on how much you sell) on top of your basic salary. If you want to become a sales manager You’ll need experience in sales – and have a good record of achieving targets, but you won’t necessarily need specific qualifications (aside from a grade C or above in English and maths), because it’s more about your personality – how outgoing, persuasive and likeable you are.

Arora Tanisha, 16, St Margaret’s Girls’ College, Hong Kong

“The higher education level you accomplish the better future you will have.” Everyone says that but is it true? True, you will start with a low wage if you don’t have a university degree but you’ll have a three-year head start with work experience.
