Explainer | Best podcasts for runners 2022: under-the-radar shows to inspire trail, road or track runners

  • Five podcasts for runners that can inspire and inform, firing you up to get out there and train
  • Some of the best podcasts go under the radar but are every bit as worthy of your time as their more famous counterparts

Podcasts are proliferating, to the benefit of all. But it can cause choice paralysis, and some lesser-known podcasts get lost in the pile. What should runners listen to?

There are countless popular podcasts for runners, so some may have slipped down a long list you intended to try, or not reached your radar yet.

Here are just five of many you can tune into to get inspired for your next run.

Endurance Asia

Whether you are based in Asia or not, you will be fascinated and gripped by the in-depth interviews on Endurance Asia. Scott Pugh and Ric Stockfis are joined by a range of endurance athletes, not just runners. A lot of their guests are ultra runners, such as Jacky Leung, the first person to run sub-50 hours on the 298km Hong Kong Four Trails Ultra Challenge.

This podcast falls into the “under the radar” category. It may not have the high profile of others on this list – it is simply a passion project for Singapore-based Pugh and Stockfis. The pair put in the hours to make it sound professional, and have an endless supply of inspiring guests.

High Performance Podcast

Improving your running is not just physical, it is also mental. The High Performance Podcast may have been overlooked by runners because it is not a dedicated running podcast. It is a series of long interviews with some of the world’s high performers.

The guests share their habits and insights, which are applicable to all walks of life, including running. It is hosted by sports broadcaster Jake Humphrey and organisational psychologist Damian Hughes.

Runners might be particularly interested in the sporting guests, such as Rugby World Cup winners Jonny Wilkinson and Siya Kolisi, or adventurer Ash Dykes, who was the first person to walk the length of the Yangtze.

The Sports Psych Show

Sports psychologist Dan Abrahams interviews other sports psychologists on the latest research and insights. The episodes challenge your assumptions about your mental approach to sport, and can improve your running.

The podcasts covers everything from leadership styles and training vs performing to using heart rate monitors.

Another Mother Runner

Another Mother Runner actually has three podcasts – Answers, Trains and the original Another Mother Runner.

Host Sarah Bowen Shea focuses on women in running. It is a great resource for women-specific questions and tips, along with inspiring interviews with top athletes about what makes them tick as they push themselves.

Running for Real Podcast

Host Tin Muir, herself an elite runner who represented Great Britain, welcomes a range of guests from athletes to psychologists and coaches.

The interviews are practical, and will help you take your running to the next level. But they are also personal, and are packed with inspiring stories as the guests share their highs and lows.

The interviews are relatable and inspiring, and sure to get you amped to pull on your running shoes.
