Candice Bass-Robinson created history on Saturday, becoming the first female trainer to win South Africa’s biggest race when Marinaresco took out the Grade One Durban July.

The 17-1 chance carried the top weight but got home in the final stride under the guidance of jockey Bernard Fayd’herbe.

Marinaresco went one better after finishing runner-up in last year’s renewal.

Bass-Robinson took over the license from her father Mike Bass at the start of the season and is already making a big impact.

In the other Grade One feature at Greyville, favourite Bela-Bela (Justin Snaith/Anthony Delpech) took out the Garden Province Stakes with ease.

It was a roller-coaster weekend for the Coolmore team at the Irish Derby meeting.

While they won the Group One with Capri (ridden by Seamie Heffernan), English Derby hero and favourite Wings Of Eagles has been retired after fracturing his near-fore sesamoid joint when finishing third.

Adding insult to injury, last start Tattersalls Gold Cup runner-up Somehow was euthanised after fracturing her hind tibia in a trackwork gallop while the future of seven-time Group One winner Minding is in doubt with more injury concerns.

Not a good few days for trainer Aidan O’Brien.

In the other Group One at the Curragh over the weekend, the Roger Varian-trained Nezwaah claimed the Pretty Polly Stakes in a dominant performance with Andrea Atzeni in the saddle.

Across in mainland Europe and Zarak (Alain de Royer-Dupre/Christophe Soumillon) took out the Group One Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud, beating the favourite Silverwave and Armande.

And finally in Hamburg, Windstoss (Markus Klug/Maxim Pecheur) stood tall in the Group One Deutsches Derby, edging out Enjoy Vijay and Rosenpurpur.
