He’s had to endure a string of near misses since bringing up his half-century late last month but Karis Teetan heads to Sha Tin on Saturday with a book of rides that has him well placed to taste that winning feeling once again.

A clear second in the jockeys’ premiership on an even 50 winners after 54 meetings, Teetan has ridden five seconds and two thirds at the past two meetings but is yet to salute in March.

The 33-year-old boasts a full book of 10 rides this weekend, with Young Champion, Great Spirit, You’remyeverything, Solid Shalaa and Massive Action all heading to Sha Tin in strong form.

“I’ve got an open book of rides, there’s a few that stand out. I just hope to give them their chance to do their best,” said the Mauritian jockey.

Young Champion brings the class to Teetan’s hand and the John Size-trained four-year-old looks nicely placed to continue his rise in the Class Two Sheung Yeung Shan Handicap (1,400m).

Up in grade after breaking his Hong Kong maiden at the second time of asking last start, Young Champion carries just 116 pounds in his toughest assignment to date.

“He looks likes a really promising horse, he’s done everything right so far. Thanks to Mr Size for the opportunity, he’s a lovely horse to get on and also he goes into the race with a nice weight on his back,” Teetan said.

“It’s a nice race for him. I’ve watched his trials and his races and it looks like he’s done everything right so far.”

Bentley aims to continue top form on reuniting with Blue Marlin at Sha Tin

Settled just off the speed by gun for hire James McDonald on last month’s Group One Gold Cup (2,000m) undercard, Young Champion finished strongly to put a length on nearest rival Green N White.

The son of Zoustar has since had a quiet trial under Brenton Avdulla on the all-weather track and must now negotiate barrier nine under Teetan in a deep Class Two contest featuring the likes of The Golden Scenery, Fantastic Treasure, Dancing Code and Lucky Encounter.

While Young Champion is the only last-start winner among Teetan’s rides, he jumps aboard four gallopers who beat all but one when last in action.

Great Spirit looks the most progressive of those after an impressive debut second four weeks ago, with the three-year-old son of American Pharoah closing nicely from behind midfield under Teetan to finish half a length behind fellow debutant Chateauneuf.

While the David Hayes-trained Chateauneuf will look to make it two from two under Zac Purton in the second section of the Class Four Needle Hill Handicap (1,200m), Great Spirit lines up in the first section of the contest three races later and will not have to resume hostilities with his conqueror.

Dennis Yip Chor-hong’s Great Spirit does have to contend with barrier 11, however, with Teetan likely to have to take his medicine and go back in a contest that should be run at a decent pace.

Rounding out Teetan’s rides are All Is Ready, Winning Steps, Enterprise Attack, Sing Dragon and Jumbo Fortune.
